I remember the day I started buying LP's, it was 1975, in Spain. I was
15 years old and went to visit my cousin in Madrid. He had a 1200 Lp's
collections, and a Dual record player. In his small room I was
introduced to many of the singers I was going to listen to for the rest
of my life. Out of this trip I came back with 5 records, I remember a
Van Morrison Twofer that included His Band And Street Choir and Tupelo
Honey which I still have, A Rolling Stones Greatest Hits, Al Stewart's
Modern Times, and probably a Jackson Browne and one other.
The next time I traveled in 1977 I did a stop in London and came back
with 40 Lp's. I am talking about Jackson Browne who was a real favorite
until 1978, and at that time if some of you remember there was a singer
with a very similar voice who issued an LP named Terence Boylan. He was
a FM radio favorite at the time, issued another LP Suzy, not as good as
the first one, and disappeared... I am listening to a reissue of his
first LP (minus one song), most of Suzy and 4 new songs. The reissue is
on an obscure record label Spinnaker Records, I bought it at Amazon. It
is still amazing, I wonder what the hell happened to Terence Boylan
since then. Anyone knows? Maybe he is on this list...
If someone knows more about Boylan, this seems the eternal question at
Amazon, or has one of his shows taped somewhere please contact me.
Being a reviewer for Fame (http://www.acousticmusic.com) I sometimes get
to review some real gem. This time it is Tim Harrison, a Canadian
singer songwriter who covers much of the same as Van, that is
irish/celtic influences (no newage), philosophical lyrics and expressive
singing. Though his voice is far from being as good as the Van (what
voice is?), his songwriting is great, and his version of Carryfergus on
his cd Bridges beats anything I have heard till now. Really highly
recommended.
