And I know that my comment is off-topic to your question "Where have all the socially conscious  singer/songwriters gone?", but I just have to throw my standard-issue defense of free speech out here
and ask that we remember that if we let Tipper and friends censor Eminem(sp?), they would also shut  down Ani and many others.  In fact, once we let them shut anyone up, the very people you are seeking 
will be the first to go (or go underground).
