[FM] Camp Hoboken Rides Again!

I traveled last night overland, cross-country, through the lurking
threat of snow to a little place called Oona's in Bellows Falls, Vermont. I
rolled there on the windiest (and bumpiest) roads I ever did see, to go hang
with my pals Christian Bauman and Linda Sharar. I should have expected it,
but was quite surprised anyway to find that the missing link, Gregg Cagno
had also tagged-along for the ride. That being the case, last night's show
at the Thursday night "Flying Under Radar" series turned out to be quite a
blast, and much more than two people merely playing two sets. Not that it
would have been as droll as that might sound, it's just that Cagno brings
that little something along everywhere he goes. That Alvarez guitar and
that little rack of guitar effects. Add to that his newly adopted Fedora
hat, and we had our very own Inspector Gadget on hand to texture things, add
some vocals, plus a killer song of his own for which the three of them all
rocked the house.
This was Bauman's first gig in quite some time. Chris has been busy working
on getting that new daughter to turn 1, plus writing a novel (also great --
what I've read of it...) which hopefully will see the light of day with a
large publisher in the not-too-distant future. Cross all fingers. Linda
was her usual glowing self, and once again both of them made evident that
it's clearly time to put all of those great new songs onto new recordings.
The usual Camp Hoboken humor was ever-present, especially with Bauman who
put a wry twist to his portion after Linda finished soothing us each time
around, such as with his "Dog Days." At one point Linda requested the
smoke-filled room vibe, so Cagno jacked-up the reverb at which point she
commenced to completely alter the mood. You would almost swear she had an
upright bass built into that guitar she was playing. Wonderfully
hidden-layers. For Christian, not only was this the first gig in a long
time, but the last from him for us for awhile. He went after every song as
if it were the last time he would ever get the chance to play them. So much
for his claiming to be out of practice (and not feeling completely up to
par). Camp Hobo tag-along, Polly Matthewson was also by to visit, hang, and
smile lots.
Charlie Hunter of course was there, heckling the gang occasionally from the
bar, and in general being just a great guy, running a great series. I also
had the chance to meet George Leisey, who it turns out is the professional
photographer who just did the firey work on Ben Demerath's new CD jacket.
The portable campfire unfortunately was left home, but there was no lack of
heat generated by these folks. To find out more about the wonderfully-wacky
world of Camp Hoboken (I liken them to the Peanuts gang...), point your
