Greg Greenway's new CD, Something Worth Doing, is fabulous.
That's the short-short version, and perhaps I should wait until the
liner notes are complete before saying more so I can give proper
credit. Those in the know, or on the CD, feel free to fill in the
blanks! Because I can't wait to share -- advance copies were
available this weekend, and mine's been spinning nonstop ever
since.
Something Worth Doing has all the elements we've come to expect
from Greg, and then some. It begins with a powerful song, his own
"In the Name of Love" blended with U2's "Pride." Very singable,
with a message and a chance for him to use that great voice. The
CD ends with Greg's beautiful rendition of Phil Och's "Crucifixion."
It's amazing that I can listen to a song that tops nine minutes, and
be sorry when I realize he's coming to the end of it.
In between there are songs like "Runaway Train" that allow Greg to
take his continuing love affair with wife Audrey public. There's also
a sweet lullaby, the appealing "Passion Dance" (yes, I admit the
name hooked me), and the wonderful but strangely-titled
instrumental, "Midnight in Khartoum." The songs on this CD offer a
lot of variety; some have a simple stripped-down arrangement while
others have a bigger sound; Greg loves to sing with his friends.
In inimitable Greenway fashion, the mysteries of birth and death
become an opportunity for an optimistic reminder in "Every Little
Day":
Every little day the world's brand new
The sun comes up and the clouds roll through
Everything else is just up to you
Every little day the world's brand new
It works, and you'll find yourself singing this refrain again and again.
Surprises come in the form of my daughter's favorite, "The Way of
the World" - a song with a wacky comic interlude and a jazzy
groove - and title track "Something Worth Doing."
It's a record to enjoy - no surprise there.
