I found this review from Revolutions-Roots Music Online about the Darryl
Purpose UK tour..
Darryl Purpose is the kind of person for whom the expression 'quite a
character' was created. A huge man (standing downstairs I couldn't see his
head!), he professed to be a former professional blackjack player whose
claim to fame was that he had been asked to leave casinos on six
continents. Hugely entertaining, his songs rang true enough for me to
believe that they were at least semi-autobiographical. Dangerous Game told
the tale of playing blackjack in Sri-Lanka during not one, but two civil
wars. Personal relationships were examined in Late For Dinner, the tale of
a woman whose husband left without warning, while Last Great Kiss Of The
20th Century was a lovely (made up) love song with a tender twist. Fans of
Loudon Wainwright III and John Prine are strongly advised to check out his
albums on Tangible Music.
Darryl is a great songwriter who is just coming into his own. You can
catch him at House Concert in West Milford, New Jersey on Sunday March 25
at 5:00. I'll be glad to forward details to anyone who is interested in
hearing more about this show.
