Dear F_M,
Jackson Browne headlined Appel Farm Music Fest Saturday (June 1), with a solo
acoustic set - just Jackson, playing each of 7 (that's right, 7) guitars, and
his piano. It's amazing how good he is, with just his voice and lyrics
carrying each song. The guitar (mostly Gibsons) and piano - just simple,
plain strumming or picking - the Yamaha keyboard - nothing fancy there,
either. So, with Jackson Browne, it's a golden voice that carries the low and
high notes of each song just as richly as all the other notes, and it's
meaningful lyrics that resonate, for this crowd, at least.
Congrats to Sean Timmons, Appel Farm's artistic director, his staff and
volunteers, for putting on another great event.
And - of all the songs I came away humming, the one that lasts is by Guy
Davis (from the Redhouse Records "Nod To Bob" album) - the Bob Dylan tune
"(What's a) Sweetheart Like You (Doing In A Dump Like This)".
Happy Summer (and come on out to Concerts Under the Stars/Philadelphia -
umconcerts.org, each Sunday nite, all summer long. No BOT, but fun anyway),
d.
