Dear F_M List Folks,

American Roots Music - a new oversized book with great photos, tells the story
of folk, blues, country, gospel, Cajun, Zydeco, Tejano, Native American, et
al, in a straight-forward journalistic style. If you know everything that
this book has to tell, you'll want to read it anyway. And if you want to
learn a few new things about the roots of our music, you can't go wrong by
reading this book. The way a song can bring tears to your eyes - the small
stories here - they can do the same. The book is sentimental, of course, but
that's allowed. Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters meet Joni
Mitchell, Guy Davis and Bonnie Raitt (who wrote the Foreward). I guess the
most interesting things about American Roots Music for me is the way the music
has been passed down, absorbed, and rejuvenated. I love the early Bob Dylan
photos - B.B. King, too. This book is to literature as the film "Songcatcher"
was (almost) to documentaries. I recommend it. It's a bit expensive at
$49.50, but in the true folk tradition, my copy comes from the local public
library, from where it will be circulated to others.
